Zeocin™ is a copper-chelated glycopeptide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces CL990, a phleomycin D1 formulation, and a selective antibiotic for the Sh ble gene.
Zeocin™ is inserted into DNA and causes apoptosis by cleaving DNA, and it works effectively on aerobic cells. Therefore, Zeocin™ is an antibiotic that can be used to effectively select vectors containing Sh ble genes from various cell types (bacteria, eukaryotic microorganisms, plant cells and animal cells) .
Resistance to Zeocin™ is conferred by the Sh ble gene of Streptoalloteichus hindustanus , and Zeocin™ is inactivated upon binding to antibiotics. The Sh ble gene has a small size of 370bp and is used in various vectors of InvivoGen.
In general, mammalian cells are sensitive to concentrations of 50-400 µg/ml and bacteria at concentrations of 25 µg/ml.
